Effect of implementation of “drug catalogue for military reasonable medical treatment” on utilization of drugs in out-patient pharmacy of Chinese PLA General Hospital

ABSTRACT  Objective: To analyze the effect of implementation of “drug catalogue for military reasonable medical treatment” on utilization of drugs in out-patient pharmacy of Chinese PLA General Hospital.Methods: Data of drug utilization in the first half year of 2004 and 2005 were collected from out-patient pharmacy of this hospital.Changes of variety,quantity,use frequency,average daily cost and total cost of drugs,quantity of prescriptions and cost of a single prescription were analyzed. Results:Since “drug catalogue for military reasonable medical treatment” was implemented in August 2004, the quantity of prescriptions and cost of a single prescription have increased by 6.6% and 72.3%,respectively. Consumption sum of 7 kinds of drugs,such as drugs for digestive system,drugs for nervous system and hormone drugs,rose by 172.0%,while their DDDs only rose by 27.9%.The main reason of this change was that some drugs with good efficacy and high price were used in military free medical service. Conclusion: The varieties of drugs that can be used and the cost of drugs have been increased since “drug catalogue for military reasonable medical treatment” was implemented in this hospital.
