ABSTRACT  Objective: To investigate the effects of PDCA cycle on monitoring of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in Xi’an Central Hospital of Shaanxi Province. Methods: The problems that existed in ADRs monitoring of the hospital in 2015 were analyzed and interventions were made with PDCA cycle, and the obtained effects were evaluated 1 year after the implementation of PDCA cycle. Results: After the implementation of PDCA cycle and through perfection of ADRs monitoring system, establishment of the rewards and punishments system, intensified training of medical personnel, establishment of the network ADRs reporting platform and other measures as well, the number of ADRs reports in 2016 increased by 101.9%,of which the percentage of new ADRs reports increased from 8.23% to 16.93% when compared with those in 2015. The number of ADRs reported by clinicians obviously increased from 4.43% to 16.93%. The percentage of ADRs induced by antibacterials and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) injections decreased significantly, with that of antibacterials decreased from 43.04% to 32.29% and that of TCM injections decreased from 23.42% to 13.48%,respectively. Conclusion: The application of PDCA cycle could obviously improve the management of ADRs monitoring of the hospital.
