ABSTRACT  Objective: To observe the effects of α-thioctic acid on bone metabolism in elderly men with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Totally,50 elderly men with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomly assigned to the α-thioctic acid group (or the treatment group) and the non α-thioctic acid group (or the control group),each consisting of 25 patients. The patients in the treatment group were treated with α-thioctic acid for 14 days.General data of the patient conditions were collected before medication. Then, detections were made in bone formation indexes, including bone alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, total type Ⅰ collagen end amino extended peptide (PINP),and bone resorption index, including β- type Ⅰ collagen end-carboxy peptide degradation products.Three months after treatment, detection of the changes in the indexes of bone formation and bone resorption was made in the patients of the 2 groups, and statistical analyses were performed accordingly. Results: Before treatment, there were no statistical differences in the indexes of bone metabolism, when comparisons were made between the patients of the 2 groups. However, following treatment, the levels of PINP in the patients of the treatment group elevated,as compared with those before treatment (P<0.05),and statistical significance could also be noted, when compared with those of the control group (P<0.05).Conclusion: α-Thioctic acid could elevate PINP level in the elderly men with type 2 diabetes and consequently promote bone formation.
