Serum level of procalcitonin in bloodstream infective patients and its role in empirical anti-infective therapy

ABSTRACT  Objective: To investigate the serum level of procalcitonin(PCT) in bloodstream infective patients and analyze its role in empirical anti-infective therapy.Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 1782 inpatients with blood pathogen culture positive results in Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from 2013 to 2015.Blood pathogen culture results,PCT levels,and other related data were collected and analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 statistical software.Results: Six hundred and twenty patients were confirmed to have bloodstream infection and their PCT levels were determined. Consequently, 599 patients were included in the study. The positive rate of PCT in the patients infected with G- bacteria was highest (185/232, 79.7%), the rate of fungus infection came the next (33/51, 64.7%) and the rate of G+ bacteria came the last (157/316, 49.7%). The median PCT level(3.72 ng/ml) in the patients infected with G- bacteria was significantly higher than those infected with G+ bacteria (0.50 ng/ml) and fungi (0.95 ng/ml). Age and pathophysiological conditions of the patients had impact on the serum level of PCT. Conclusion: There existed obvious differences in the positive rates and levels of PCT in the patients infected with different bacteria. PCT level could provide reference for empirical anti-infective therapy, but with certain limitations.
